The Power of Social Media

Many companies still wonder about the value of having a presence on social media. (And for the record, if you’re not on yet, you *really* should be, but that’s another blog post.) It’s beneficial in so many ways and it’s not always about promoting your business or your product, but to sometimes get involved and really do good.

Case in point. If you live in BC (or anywhere else in Canada, for that matter), you have likely heard the story of 6-year-old Everett Botwright.

Everett

This adorable little peanut is autistic and is very particular about what he eats. His latest staple is Kraft Dinner – the Star Wars limited edition only. Limited edition = the family ran out. Concerned his son would eat less without his special Mac, Everett’s dad Reed went on Facebook asking for help in finding boxes. His post went viral. Canadians nationwide were sharing it, many going so far as to buy and send this special KD to Everett.

Even noted Canadian, James Tiberius Kirk himself, Mr. William Shatner got involved.

Mr. Shatner tweeted Kraft for help, who then came through in a big way.  Talk about corporate responsibility!

This outpouring of support for Everett is just the latest example of how social media can be a powerful tool to engage people, strike a chord in the heart of a nation, and spur them into action. We see all sorts of posts about Random Acts of Kindness (one of my favourites is Misha Collins’ GISHWHES, the worldwide scavenger hunt that annually creates the single largest donation to his charity, Random Acts), helping immigrants or those living in poverty, crowdfunding for people who have lost a loved one to cancer or tragedy and now have a family to care for alone, and so many other examples. It’s truly heartwarming to see how we can embrace each other as a society without even knowing each other. A story like Everett’s keeps us having faith in humanity and keeps us from becoming apathetic or cynical.

Go Canada!! Go do Random Acts of Kindness! Go humanity!
